The Blue Nowhere

This book has opened my eyes to dangers that exist in computers. I could be very careful in protecting my personal information in the computer, but we do businesses with companies who use computers to track their customers. Phate, the killer, had the technology and the brains to find ways to enter people's personal space. I perceive him as person who treats people as pieces in a chess game. He kills people without remorse.
He lost his ability to distinguish between right and wrong. Gillette and Phate were neglected by their parents. Computers become their companion. Computers connect them to the outside world. Phate emotionally detaches from the world. Phate's family provided only material things. Phate makes his own rules.
At the beginning Gillette grew up with some family values. Before his father left he took him to the store to choose one thing to buy. Gillette chooses a computer. The computer introduces him to "Blue Nowhere".
He copes with desertion by envolving himself into the computer.
Lack of ethics and guidelines make hackers become their own boss.
The characters consider themselves God. They have access to almost every company and individuals. These people have no consequences because they hide behind computers. Phate could read his victims' email and monitor their activities. This is scary how a person can evade your privacy and there's no law against it. In the book Phate monitors Jaime's computer at the school academy. He even helps him to find the security password to exit the academy.
I have become more cautious with my computer. The book gives information on how to tell if someone is monitoring your computer.

ISTE Standards

Some of the teachers, included me, in our district are not knowledgeable in computers. It has not been mandatory to be proficient in computers. Teachers with computer experience are integrating their subjects with computer activities. This year we had to do many reports in students' scores in reading and math. I had to learn with some help from my co-workers. This year I have learn to use my computer more efficient from my professors. I learned how to create a blog.
Technology is not in the agenda with principals. They are more concern in raising our scores in math and reading. We have spend more time in teaching to the test.
I read the NETS for teachers and students. There is lots of work to be done in the coming school year.
The first thing I would do is to discuss the ethical, legal, and human issues in using computers. I can start by discussing the proper use of passwords, be responsible, and to promote safe use of technology resources. Creating a poster with guidelines can help remind students.
Students will learn computer terminology by writing the words and drawing illustrations. Students can observe and explore the parts of the computer. I will demonstrate how all the components work together
to create a product. Students will learn the steps to turn on and off the computers in the the morning and at the end of the day.
I would make time for my students to work together in gathering information for reports in nonfiction topics. They will have the opportunity to select information resources for the appropriate task in the internet to make their presentation. This activity will enhance their decision making skill.
Video Streaming is another activity. Students locate videos with topics
taught in class, such as insects and planets. They learn how operate the symbols of play, rewind, stop, and so on.
When my students have projects, I am going to encourage my parents
to lead and support their children in using multimedia to present their finish product.
One of the most important thing to teach a student is to have positive attitudes toward operating computers. My job is to provide a creative learning environment for my students.

Anwsers to Ethical Questions

You can be ethical without being religious. Ethics are just a list of guidelines for us to follow. This could be rules that we might learn in school, social clubs, or in the workplace. People or groups create their own ethics foir the good of the group. Ethics can be based on culture.
During the hunting and gathering era, people work together and share their food. The Indian tribes in America also followed similiar traditions.
Both groups must have had a meeting and discuss ethics for their tribes.

Muslims like other religions originated with a relationship with their god.
I think Muslims are not ethical. They do have some laws that pertain to treating others with honesty and compasionate. Their actions are done for the sake of a harmonious peaceful social life. They do it by living in faith in Allah. Church and state have ideally been the same for Muslims. Muhummad did not just found a religious movement but found a community of believers.
Ethics can be explain by one word "Survival." Any community can't survive without a set of guidelines. Each one of us have a wisdom box of
rules that we live by. Your box could be different from everyone else.
If everyone follows their own wisdom box, our actions collide with each other. No one will accomplish a thing. That's why we need some common rules to help us get along in families, with other people, and especially in our workplace. Ethics are created for the good of the community. They are gear toward appropriate behavior. Unethical behavior hurts everyone.

Ethics for Kids

For years teachers have shared their passwords with other teachers and subsitute teachers. I guess we were breaking the law. Recently our principal informed us
under no circumstances should we tell our password. Several years ago one of my students went to a website that was not appropriate. The principal had a meeting with the parents. At the beginning of school parents and students sign
a technology form explaining the computer rules. Young students have a hard time understanding the seriousness of logging into someone else username. I would need to have more discussions with my students in using the computers.
